Breaking news: Boil water advisory for inhabitants of Vlaardingen, Netherlands (E. coli bacterium)

  • News

The E. coli bacterium, which can cause stomach ache and diarrhoea, has been found in the drinking water in Vlaardingen. Evides water company has therefore advised all Vlaardingen inhabitants to boil their water for three minutes before drinking it or using it for food.

This boiling advisory does not apply to the laundry or shower water. Small amounts of the bacteria entered the drinking water during works. Evides is still investigating what went wrong.

The boiling advisory will remain in force for a minimum of three days. Inhabitants should boil their water in a pan or kettle. Water kettles usually stop when water boils, and the bacterium only dies after boiling water for three minutes, writes RTV Rijnmond.

Vlaardingen has 72,000 inhabitants.

Note from microLAN:

The BACTcontrol is currently in use in the laboratory with a well-know water utility. There the BACTcontrol is the 1st line of defence for the screening of all water samples gathered during maintenance activities in the city. It enables the utility to react within hours to a possible contamination and prevent possible outbreaks.
